Perfect to complement the Christmas pudding, Puffing Billy, is another superb Single Batch from Little Creatures. Hugely hopped, this full bodied dark lager luckily is softened with an unusual addition – Beechwood smoked malt.
The name “Puffing Billy” name arises from the town of Einbeck, Germany:
Through the heavy accents of beer loving Bavarians, who took a great liking of the dark malty beer being brewed in the German town of Einbeck, the name of the town was mistaken as the German word for a Billy Goat – “ein bock”.
(Little Creatures, 2012)
Puffing Billy pours with a deep mahogany colour with a small off-white head. Rather nice notes of toffee and caramel come through and are balanced by the smokiness of the malt. This beer would be even better if the smokiness was more distinct.
I quite enjoyed this beer and certainly would recommend it for a Christmas lunch – it’s beautifully rich in flavour but light enough to be drinkable on a hot Aussie summer day. It won’t be around for long so grab one soon!
Great colour with remnants of yeast
